Improve Your Website's SEO
A practical guide to improving your organic search performance. SEO audit, technical fixes, content, link building and tracking results.
The steps to follow
Run a full SEO audit
Start by taking stock of where you stand. Use Google Search Console to see which keywords you rank for, which pages are indexed and what technical errors exist. Look at your organic traffic in Google Analytics: which pages get search traffic, and which keywords convert? Use a tool such as Screaming Frog to crawl your site and find the technical problems: 404 errors, redirect chains, pages with no meta description, duplicate content. Measure your Core Web Vitals with PageSpeed Insights. Review your link profile with Ahrefs or SEMrush. The audit gives you a prioritised road map of what to fix.
Fix technical SEO
Technical SEO is the foundation of your visibility. Make sure your site runs on HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate. Improve load speed: compress images as WebP, enable caching, minify your CSS and JavaScript. Submit an up-to-date XML sitemap in Google Search Console. Set up a robots.txt file that allows your important pages to be crawled. Add schema.org markup to enrich your search results. Make sure the site is fully responsive and mobile-friendly. Fix 404 errors with 301 redirects. Use short, descriptive URLs that include your target keywords. Check that every page has one unique H1.
Optimise your on-page content
Good content is the strongest ranking factor there is. Each page should target one main keyword plus semantically related secondary keywords. Write title tags under 60 characters that include your main keyword. Meta descriptions under 155 characters should make people want to click. Structure your content with H2 and H3 headings that pick up variations of your keywords. Write in depth and be genuinely useful: Google favours pages that fully answer what the searcher wanted. Give images descriptive alt text. Add relevant internal links to your other pages. Refresh your existing content regularly to keep it current and relevant.
Build a content strategy
A blog you actually keep up is a powerful SEO lever. Find the questions your audience is asking with tools such as AnswerThePublic or the People Also Ask box. Build an editorial calendar with at least two articles a month. Each article should target a long-tail keyword with enough search volume. Write thorough guides of 1500 to 3000 words that become the reference on their subject. Vary the formats: how-to guides, lists, case studies, comparisons. Link each article internally to your commercial pages. Add an FAQ at the end of each article to capture more specific questions. Promote every article on social media and in your newsletter.
Earn links
Backlinks are still a major ranking factor. Focus on quality rather than quantity: one link from an authoritative site is worth more than a hundred from weak ones. Create content worth linking to: original research, infographics, free tools, reference guides. List your business in the professional directories that matter in your field, and on Google My Business. Offer guest articles to blogs in your sector. Build partnerships with complementary businesses so links come about naturally. Watch for brand mentions that carry no link and ask those sites to add one. Never buy low-quality links: it can earn you a Google penalty.
Track results and adjust
SEO is ongoing work that needs regular review. Build a dashboard with your main indicators: rankings for your target keywords, organic traffic, click-through rate, conversions from search. Check your positions weekly with a rank tracking tool. Look at which pages are gaining or losing traffic to spot both opportunities and problems. Run a technical audit every quarter to catch new errors. Adapt your content plan to the results: double down on what works. Keep up with the Google algorithm updates that could affect your positions. Meaningful SEO results usually appear after three to six months of steady effort.
