To improve your own Google ranking, the three actions with the most impact are: optimising the title and H1 tags on every page around the right keywords, completing and activating your Google Business Profile, and creating a dedicated page for each service and town you target. Those three actions alone can double your local traffic in 2 to 4 months, with no agency and no budget.

This guide gives you 8 actions ranked by real impact, with the free tools to put them in place and the results to expect. No technical jargon, just steps you can work through this weekend.

Action 1: set up Google Search Console (free, top priority)

Before you optimise anything, you need to know exactly where you stand. Google Search Console is Google's own tool, and it shows you:

  • the searches your site already appears for
  • which pages get clicks and which are ignored
  • the technical errors Google has found on your site

  • How to set it up:

  • Go to search.google.com/search-console
  • Add your property (your URL)
  • Verify through Google Analytics (if you already have it) or with an HTML file
  • Wait 48 hours for the first data

  • You will come back to it every week. It is your basic SEO dashboard, and it is 100% free.

Action 2: optimise your title and H1 tags

The title tag (the text that appears in browser tabs and in Google's results) is the strongest SEO signal after backlinks. If your title reads "Home" or "Welcome", you are losing hundreds of potential visitors.

    Rules for an effective title:

  • 50 to 60 characters maximum (any longer and Google cuts it off)
  • put the main keyword at the start
  • include the town if you are targeting locally
  • different on every page of the site

  • Real examples:

    PagePoor titleGood title
Plumber home pagePlomberie MartinPlumber in Versailles, callout within 1h, Martin Plomberie
Service pageOur servicesWater leak repair Versailles, emergency plumber 92
Contact pageContactFree plumbing quote Versailles, reply within 24h

The H1 (the main heading visible on the page) should be close to the title, but it can differ slightly. There is only ever one H1 per page.

Action 3: create one page per service and per town

This is the most underrated action and also the most effective. Google cannot rank a single page for 10 different searches.

If you are an electrician in Versailles and you also cover Rueil-Malmaison and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, you need:

  • your-site.fr/electrician-versailles/
  • your-site.fr/electrician-rueil-malmaison/
  • your-site.fr/electrician-saint-germain-en-laye/

  • And for each service:

  • your-site.fr/electrical-panel-installation-versailles/
  • your-site.fr/electrical-repairs-versailles/

  • Every page needs: an H1 heading with the exact search term, 300 to 600 words written specifically for that area or service, your contact details, and a photo of a job in the area if you have one.

Trap to avoid: do not create 50 identical pages with only the town name swapped out (duplicate content). Each page needs at least 30% unique content.

Action 4: optimise your Google Business Profile

For local searches, Google Business Profile sometimes matters more than your website. It is what puts you in the local pack (the three Google Maps listings above the organic results).

    Checklist for a strong profile:

  • Business name: your real name, with no keywords bolted on ("Martin Plomberie", not "Martin Plomberie best plumber Versailles")
  • Primary category: as specific as you can make it
  • Description: 750 characters max, your services plus your area plus a call to action
  • Photos: at least 10 (exterior, interior, team, finished jobs)
  • Opening hours: up to date, including bank holidays
  • Attributes: every relevant attribute ticked (card payments, accessibility, and so on)
  • Posts: at least one post a week (a job photo or an offer)
  • Replies to reviews: 100% of them, positive and negative

  • Action 5: speed up your site (a direct SEO factor)

Google has used loading speed as a ranking signal since 2021. A slow site is penalised, even when the content is good.

Quick test: go to PageSpeed Insights, enter your URL, and look at your mobile score (not desktop, Google indexes the mobile version first).

  • Score 90-100: excellent
  • Score 70-89: acceptable, there is room to improve
  • Score < 70: a real problem, and it is hurting your ranking

  • Quick wins to lift the score:

  • compress your images with Squoosh or TinyPNG (target: under 150 KB per image)
  • switch on Cloudflare's free plan (CDN plus caching)
  • remove any plugins or JavaScript you do not need

  • Test your site speed for free

Backlinks (links from other sites to yours) are still one of the most powerful SEO signals. For a local site, there is no point chasing the national press, a handful of links from local or trade sites is enough.

Easy backlink sources for a small business owner:

  • a listing on Pages Jaunes and Kompass (free)
  • a profile with your trade body or professional association
  • a link on your suppliers' sites (in their "our partners" section)
  • a listing on Houzz, Habitissimo, or any trade platform
  • an article or notice in a local paper or a traders' association

  • Every link you earn is a vote of confidence in Google's eyes. 10 quality backlinks are worth more than 100 bought links from dubious sites, and poor quality links can actually penalise your site.

Action 7: write content that answers your customers' questions

Content (blog articles, FAQs, guides) is one of the most durable SEO levers there is. Once published, a good article can bring in visitors for years.

How to find what to write:

  • Type your main search term into Google and look at the "People also ask" box. Every question there is a potential article.
  • Use the search suggestions (the words that appear as you type into Google): they reflect what people actually look for.
  • Ubersuggest shows you the common questions around your topic along with estimated search volume.
  • Ask your customers directly: "What did you search for before you contacted me?" Their words become your keywords.

  • The format that works for most local articles:

  • a question as the title ("How do you choose an electrician in Versailles?")
  • a direct 50-word answer in the first paragraph (snippet bait)
  • H2s as follow-up questions
  • 700 to 1,200 words in total
  • a link to your contact or quote page at the end

  • Action 8: monitor and adjust every month

SEO is not a one-off job, it is an ongoing process that rewards consistency. Every month, spend 30 minutes on these checks:

    In Google Search Console:

  • Which new searches brought clicks this month?
  • Are there any new errors (404 pages, mobile problems)?
  • Has the number of indexed pages gone up or down?

  • In Google Business Profile:

  • How many times was your profile viewed this month?
  • How many calls and direction requests?
  • Are there new reviews waiting for a reply?

  • On your site:

  • Do your title tags still match the searches that matter most?
  • Are there new service or area pages you should be creating?

  • Those 30 minutes a month will do more for your SEO than any paid tool bought and never used.

What we see at ConvertiLab: business owners who apply these 8 actions over six months see their organic traffic rise by 80 to 200% on average. Those who stop after actions 1 and 2 still gain 30 to 50%, consistency beats perfection.

Frequently asked questions about improving your own SEO

Can you improve your Google ranking yourself without an agency?

Yes, you can improve your own Google ranking, especially on local searches where competition is light. The actions with the most impact and no technical skill required are: optimising your title and H1 tags, completing your Google Business Profile, collecting customer reviews regularly, and creating one page per service with the town you are targeting. For competitive national searches, an SEO specialist will get you there faster.

Which free SEO tools are the most useful?

The most effective free SEO tools are: Google Search Console (performance and technical errors, free), Google Business Profile (local visibility, free), PageSpeed Insights (speed and Core Web Vitals, free), Ubersuggest (keyword research, 3 free searches a day), and the free ConvertiLab SEO audit, which checks 40+ points in 60 seconds.

How long does it take to see results from SEO work?

The first SEO results usually appear within 4 to 12 weeks on local searches where competition is light. On national or highly competitive searches, expect 6 to 18 months. Work on your Google Business Profile (reviews, photos, posts) can show results in 2 to 4 weeks.

What is the most common SEO mistake small business owners make?

The most common mistake is having a single 'Our services' page that lists everything, instead of one dedicated page per service AND per town. Google cannot rank one page for 10 different searches, every target search needs its own page. The second mistake is neglecting Google Business Profile, which often matters more than the website itself for local searches.
