How do you use retargeting to win back the visitors who did not buy?

97% of your website visitors leave without buying and without contacting you. That is a universal fact of digital marketing. But it is not inevitable. Retargeting lets you reach those visitors again with personalised ads that bring them back to your site and convert them. Retargeting campaigns show a conversion rate 70% higher than standard campaigns, because you are targeting people who already know you.

How does retargeting work and what is the difference with remarketing?

Retargeting means advertising aimed at the visitors of your site through tracking pixels (Meta Pixel, Google Tag), delivered on Meta Ads and Google Display. Remarketing covers something broader: following up existing contacts, notably by email (the abandoned basket email). In practice the two strategies combine: advertising retargeting brings the visitors back, email remarketing converts the warm prospects.

How retargeting works technically:

  • You install a tracking pixel on your site (Meta Pixel or Google Tag)
  • The pixel records the visitors and their actions (pages viewed, basket started, form abandoned)
  • You create custom audiences based on that data
  • You deliver ads only to those audiences
  • The visitors see your brand again and come back to convert

  • The 3 types of retargeting to know:

  • Website retargeting: all visitors, visitors to specific pages, form abandonments
  • Engagement retargeting: people who interacted with your ads or your videos
  • CRM retargeting: based on your client list (emails, phone numbers) for upsell and reactivation

  • How do you set up the Meta Pixel and the tracking events for effective retargeting?

To set up the Meta Pixel, create a pixel in Meta Business Manager > Events > Pixels, install the code in your site's head tag (or through Google Tag Manager), then configure the standard events. The most important events are ViewContent (a visit to a service or product page), Lead (a form submission), and Purchase (a completed sale). Check the installation with the "Meta Pixel Helper" Chrome extension.

Which advanced retargeting strategies deliver the best ROAS?

The retargeting strategies that perform best are time based segmentation (a different message depending on how long ago the visit was), sequential retargeting (telling a story in 3 or 4 steps over 30 days), and value based targeting (a specific message depending on the page visited, home page vs pricing page vs abandoned form). Strategic exclusion matters just as much: exclude recent clients and converters, and cap the frequency at 3 to 5 impressions a week so you do not irritate prospects.

Cross channel retargeting is the most advanced and the most effective technique: someone who sees your advertising on Facebook, in their inbox AND on Google Display is 3 to 4 times more likely to convert than if they only see it on one channel. That repeated exposure creates a familiarity and a credibility that speed up the buying decision.

The 4 retargeting audiences to create first:

  • All site visitors from the last 30 days (excluding converters)
  • Visitors to the pricing or quote page from the last 14 days (high intent)
  • People who watched more than 50% of one of your videos (strong engagement)
  • Your email list of unconverted prospects (CRM remarketing)

  • A time based segmentation strategy:

  • 0 to 3 days: a simple reminder, gentle urgency, "You looked at [service]"
  • 4 to 14 days: add testimonials and social proof
  • 15 to 30 days: a special offer, an exclusive discount
  • 30 to 90 days: valuable content, repositioning

  • For email remarketing (an abandoned form or basket):

  • Email 1 (1 hour later): a simple reminder with a direct link
  • Email 2 (24 hours later): social proof + urgency (limited stock)
  • Email 3 (48 hours later): a special offer with a firm deadline

  • A good email remarketing system recovers 5 to 15% of abandoned baskets.

Which metrics should you watch to measure the ROI of your retargeting campaigns?

The key metrics of a retargeting campaign are: ROAS (target > 5x, retargeting has to be very profitable because the audience is warm), CTR (target > 2%, the audience already knows your brand), frequency (< 5 impressions a week to avoid fatigue), and conversion rate (target > 5%, which is 2 to 3× a standard acquisition campaign). Watch the attribution: retargeting often claims conversions that would have happened anyway, so use multi-touch reports. To isolate the real impact of retargeting, create a holdout campaign (10% of the audience gets no ads) and compare the conversion rates between the exposed group and the control group.

    The KPIs specific to retargeting:

    MetricTargetReason
ROAS> 5xA warm audience should convert very well
CPC< 50% of coldA click costs less on a warm audience
CTR> 2%Familiarity with the brand lifts clicks
    Frequency< 5 a weekAvoid fatigue (ad fatigue)
    Conversion rate> 5%2 to 3× a standard acquisition campaign

Frequently asked questions about retargeting and remarketing

Is retargeting compatible with the GDPR?

Yes, provided you have the user's consent through a compliant cookie banner (CookieYes, Axeptio and the like). The pixel must only fire once the advertising cookies are accepted. In practice, 40 to 60% of visitors refuse cookies in Europe, which mechanically shrinks your retargeting audiences, but the people who do accept are more engaged. To offset that smaller audience, Meta offers "Advanced Matching" (secure, encrypted server side data) which recovers part of the signal lost to cookie refusals, without breaching the GDPR.

How much does a retargeting campaign cost?

The CPC in retargeting is usually 2 to 5× cheaper than in cold acquisition. With a budget of 200 to 500€/month dedicated to retargeting, you can get excellent results. The typical ROAS is 5 to 10×. A recommended budget rule: put 20 to 30% of your total advertising budget into retargeting, it is the most profitable channel per euro invested. Does retargeting work with little traffic?

You need a minimum of traffic for the audiences to be large enough. Meta requires at least 100 people in an audience before it will deliver to it. Ideally, aim for 1,000+ visitors a month for meaningful results. Below that threshold, concentrate first on acquiring qualified traffic before investing in retargeting.

What is the optimal length of a retargeting window?

The standard window is 30 days for most businesses. For products with a long buying cycle (property, B2B, expensive training), stretch it to 90 or 180 days. For impulse purchases (fashion, food), shorten it to 7 to 14 days, beyond that the person is no longer in the same buying mindset. Always segment by time window and adapt the message: urgency in the first few days, value and social proof in the following weeks. ConvertiLab case study: an estate agency in Montpellier was getting 2,200 visitors a month but only 6 enquiries. After installing the Meta Pixel and launching a three step retargeting sequence (a reminder on day 1, testimonials on day 7, a free valuation on day 20), enquiries went from 6 to 24 a month on a retargeting budget of 300€, a cost per lead of 12.5€ against 87€ in cold acquisition. !Retargeting case study estate agency - 6→24 enquiries 300€ cost per lead 12.5€
