Google Ads is the most powerful acquisition lever for winning customers quickly. Every day, 8,5 billion searches are run on Google, and paid ads capture on average 65% of the clicks with commercial intent. Yet many business owners hesitate to start, for fear of wasting their budget, and often with good reason if the campaigns are badly set up.

At ConvertiLab, we run Google Ads campaigns for our clients, and we have identified the 6 mistakes that waste 80% of budgets. This guide takes you step by step through launching your first profitable campaign in 2026.

How does Google Ads work, and which campaign types suit your business?

Google Ads runs on a CPC (cost per click) model: you only pay when a user clicks your ad. Ads appear at the top of the search results (Search), on YouTube, on millions of partner sites (Display), in Gmail and in Google Maps. For a small business that wants leads or sales, the Search network is the most effective, because you reach people who are actively looking for your product or service.

The 4 Google Ads campaign types and what each one is for:

  • Search: text ads in the Google results, ideal for leads and conversions
  • Display: banners on millions of partner sites, ideal for awareness and remarketing
  • Shopping: a product catalogue in Google Shopping, ideal for e-commerce
  • Performance Max: an automated campaign across all networks, ideal for budgets above 1 000€/month with a conversion history

  • How do you choose your Google Ads keywords and set a budget that does not go to waste?

To choose your Google Ads keywords, favour terms with strong commercial intent ("buy", "quote", "price", "best", "cheap"): they cost more per click but they convert far better. Use Exact or Phrase match to begin with, to avoid irrelevant clicks. On budget, start with 10 to 20€/day for 2 to 4 weeks to gather data, then optimise according to performance.

    Keyword match types:

    TypeExampleTriggers on
Broad (avoid at first)running shoesVariants, synonyms, loosely related queries
Phrase"running shoes"Contains the phrase in that order
Exact[running shoes]The exact query or a close variant

How to calculate your optimal Google Ads budget:

  • Identify the average CPC of your keywords (Google Keyword Planner, free)
  • Estimate your conversion rate (local small business average: 3 to 5%)
  • Work it out: Budget = (leads wanted / conversion rate) × CPC

  • Example: 10 leads a day wanted, CPC = 2€, conversion rate = 5%

    Budget = (10 / 0,05) × 2 = 400€/day

Use our advertising budget estimator for an automatic projection.

The negative keyword rule: before you even launch, build a list of 30 to 50 negative keywords. Examples for a plumber: "training", "jobs", "apprenticeship", "free", "DIY", "yourself". These terms bring clicks from people who are not potential customers. A beginner who ignores negative keywords can lose 40 to 60% of their budget on useless clicks in the first few weeks.

How do you set up Google Ads conversion tracking?

Conversion tracking is the cornerstone of a profitable campaign. Without it you are flying blind, with no idea which keywords, ads or landing pages generate leads or sales. Setting it up takes 3 steps: (1) create a conversion action in Google Ads (a thank-you page, a phone call, a form submitted), (2) install the tag on your site or connect Google Analytics 4, (3) wait for 30 conversions before switching on automated bidding strategies (Smart Bidding).

The main conversions to track on a small business site:

  • A form submission (the thank-you page)
  • A phone call placed from the site
  • Clicks on the phone number on mobile
  • Add to basket and purchase (e-commerce)

  • How do you write Google Ads ads that win clicks and conversions?

An effective Google Ads ad is made up of 3 headlines, up to 30 characters each, and 2 descriptions, up to 90 characters. The first headline should carry the main keyword, the second a piece of social proof or a unique offer, and the third an urgent call to action. Consistency between the ad and the landing page is the number 1 factor in Quality Score, and a high Quality Score brings your CPC down.

The structure of a high-performing Search ad:

  • Headline 1: Main keyword + main benefit ("Pro Website Design, Delivered In 7 Days")
  • Headline 2: Social proof or an offer ("150+ Happy Clients, Quote In 24h")
  • Headline 3: An urgent CTA ("Ask For Your Free Mock-Up")
  • Description 1: Expand on the unique value proposition
  • Description 2: Conversion levers (guarantee, price, lead time)

  • Essential extensions:

  • Sitelinks: links to your key pages (Contact, Pricing, Portfolio)
  • Structured snippets: list your services or products
  • Call: a phone number that is clickable on mobile

  • Which Google Ads mistakes do beginners make most often, and how do you avoid them?

The 5 costliest Google Ads mistakes for beginners are: targeting that is too broad (Broad match with no negative keywords), no conversion tracking (flying blind), a budget split badly between campaigns that perform and campaigns that do not, ignoring Quality Score (a low score can push your CPC up by as much as ×3), and giving up too early (a campaign needs at least 2 to 4 weeks of data before it can be optimised).

Weekly optimisations to run without fail:

  • Add negative keywords to cut out irrelevant clicks
  • Adjust bids on the keywords that perform
  • Test new ads (permanent A/B testing)
  • Analyse the triggering "search terms" in the reports
  • Improve the landing pages to lift the conversion rate

  • Google Ads optimisation - negative keywords, Quality Score, A/B test, landing page

A ConvertiLab case: a locksmith in Lyon was spending 1 500€/month on Google Ads with Broad match targeting. 60% of the clicks came from irrelevant queries, such as "locksmith role-playing game" and "become a locksmith training". After the switch to Exact match and the addition of 40 negative keywords, the cost per lead fell from 45€ to 12€ on the same budget. The volume of qualified leads tripled with no budget increase.

Frequently asked questions about Google Ads for small businesses

How much does Google Ads cost per month for a small business?

There is no compulsory minimum. A budget of 300 to 500€/month is a good starting point for testing and learning. For reliable results, expect 1 000€/month minimum. CPC ranges from 0,20€ to more than 10€ depending on your sector, and legal, property and healthcare carry the highest CPCs.

Is Google Ads profitable for small businesses?

Yes, provided you target your keywords well and optimise regularly. Local small businesses often get the best results, because geographic competition is weaker than at national level. A plumber in Rueil-Malmaison will see a far lower CPC than one bidding on "plumber Paris", with a conversion rate that is often higher. The key is to target the town, plus the precise service, plus urgency where it is relevant ("emergency 24h call-out").

How long before you see results with Google Ads?

The first impressions and clicks arrive within a few hours. For reliable, optimised results, expect 2 to 4 weeks of data collection. Before that point, do not change your campaign drastically: let Google's algorithm learn and sort out attribution.

Should you hand your Google Ads to an agency or run them yourself?

For budgets below 500€/month, running them yourself with this guide is often more profitable than using an agency, whose management fees take 20 to 30% of the budget. For budgets of 1 000€/month and above, a competent agency easily earns its fee back by improving your CPA. The essential thing is to understand the basic mechanics so you can judge your provider's work, and this guide helps you do exactly that. !Google Ads agency vs in-house - budget threshold, 20% management fee, CPA optimisation
