The product page is the most important page in your online shop. It is where a visitor decides to buy or to leave. And yet 87% of e-commerce product pages are poorly optimised: descriptions copied from the supplier, mediocre photos, missing information. The result is conversion rates stuck below 2%. An optimised product page is a virtual salesperson working around the clock.

What does a product page that converts look like in 2026?

A product page that converts has six essential parts. 1) A descriptive, SEO-friendly title (50 to 70 characters, including the product type, the brand and the main keyword). 2) Professional imagery: at least 4 angles, high-definition zoom, a photo in context, because images account for 75% of the buying decision. 3) A description built around benefits (the FAB method: Feature, Advantage, Benefit). 4) The price on display, with the old price struck through if it is on offer, the saving in euros, and an instalment option. 5) An add-to-basket button that is visible, coloured and high contrast. 6) Reassurance (reviews, security badges, returns policy, stock availability, a precise delivery date).

Six mistakes that kill product pages:

  • Copying supplier descriptions (duplicate content means an SEO penalty)
  • A single photo (never enough to convince someone online)
  • No customer reviews (92% of consumers read reviews before buying)
  • Missing information (size, weight, materials, compatibility)
  • An invisible or barely visible call to action
  • No complementary products (costs you 10 to 30% of average basket)
  • No FAQ on the page: unanswered questions create friction that drives undecided buyers away, so build in a short FAQ of 3 to 5 questions on every product page

  • How do you write a product description that makes people want to buy?

To write a product description that converts, use the FAB method: Feature (the technical spec), Advantage (how it compares with the competition), Benefit (what it actually does for the customer). For example: "High-density EVA foam sole" becomes "Absorbs 40% more impact" becomes "Run for longer without joint pain". The recommended structure: an emotional opening (one or two sentences that speak to what the customer wants), the main benefits as bullet points (3 to 5), a detailed description (2 to 3 paragraphs), then a table of technical specifications. At least 300 words for standard products, and 500 to 1 000 words for high-value technical ones.

The "we" trap in product descriptions: most people new to e-commerce write "We offer a sole that...", "Our product is designed to...". That is a fundamental copywriting error. Replace every "we" with "you": "You get a sole that...", "This product is designed so that you...". The description should talk to the customer about the customer and their benefits, not about your company. This one change can lift conversion rates by 10 to 20%.

    Reassurance every product page needs:

  • Customer reviews: ratings and comments visible on the page itself
  • Security badges: secure SSL payment, money-back guarantee
  • Returns policy: clear, visible and generous (30 days minimum)
  • Live stock: "Only 3 left" (urgency and reassurance in one)
  • A precise delivery date: an estimated arrival date, not just "3 to 5 days"

  • How do you optimise a product page for Google?

Product page SEO rests on four things. 1) The title tag: product name, brand and a secondary keyword (60 characters maximum). 2) The meta description: main benefit, call to action and your unique argument (155 characters maximum). 3) A short, descriptive URL (/mens-running-sneakers-black rather than /p/12847?cat=shoes). 4) Schema.org Product structured data so Google can display your price, availability, reviews (star ratings) and brand. Avoid supplier descriptions at all costs: duplicate content is penalised by Google and adds no value. Even for similar products, write each description yourself. One effective way to stand out when you sell the same products as your competitors is to enrich your pages with exclusive content (a user guide, a comparison table, care advice, compatible accessories). You then look like an expert rather than a reseller.

Which advanced techniques lift the average basket in an online shop?

The advanced conversion techniques for a product page are cross-selling ("Customers also bought...") and up-selling ("Premium version available for +20€"), which lift the average basket by 10 to 30%. Product video converts 80% better than a page without one, especially for technical or clothing products. Honest urgency and scarcity ("Only 3 left", "Offer ends in 24h") create a sense of urgency without misleading anyone. Product configurators (colour, size, options) reduce returns by involving the customer in personalising their order.

A guide to the perfect product photo:

Photos are responsible for 75% of the buying decision. Here is what you need, in order of priority:

  • The main photo: white or neutral background, even lighting, product centred, at least 1000 × 1000 px
  • A lifestyle photo: the product in its natural setting (kitchen, office, bedroom, depending on the product)
  • A detail photo: a close-up on the material, the stitching, the finish, the logo
  • A comparison photo: next to a familiar object to give a sense of scale
  • A back or side photo: every angle, so no doubts remain

  • For clothing and accessories, add photos on a real model in two or three different outfits. 67% of consumers say the quality of product photos matters more than customer reviews in their buying decision. A DIY photo studio with a 60€ light box and a recent smartphone gives professional results after less than an hour of setup.

Frequently asked questions about optimising product pages

How long should a product description be?

At least 300 words for standard products, and 500 to 1 000 words for technical or high-value products. The description should answer every question a potential buyer might have without padding. Test different lengths with A/B tests and measure the effect on your conversion rate.

How do you collect customer reviews for your product pages?

Send an automatic email two weeks after delivery asking for a review. Offer a 5 to 10% discount on the next order in exchange for an honest opinion. Never censor negative reviews: reply to them professionally. Pages with 10 or more reviews convert on average 3× better than pages with none. One more tip: reviews that mention specific uses ("perfect for long-distance hikes") convert 2× better than generic ones ("great product"). Encourage your customers to describe their actual situation in their review.

Are product videos really necessary in e-commerce?

Product pages with a video convert 80% better than pages without one. It is not compulsory at launch, but it is a decisive advantage for technical, clothing or premium products. A simple video shot on a reasonably good smartphone is far better than no video at all.

How do you improve a product page that gets traffic but few conversions?

If your page gets visits but few sales, look in Google Analytics 4 at the engagement rate (below 60% points to a relevance or content problem), the time spent on the page (under 1 minute means the content is not holding attention) and the scroll depth in Hotjar (to see whether most visitors never reach the call to action). The most effective fixes, in order: improve the photos first, then rework the title and opening line, then make the call to action more visible, and finally add customer reviews. A real ConvertiLab example: an artisan leather goods shop had a flagship page getting 800 visits a month but only 6 sales (a 0,75% conversion rate). The audit found a generic 80-word description, a single photo on a white background and no reviews. After the rewrite (a 450-word FAB description, 6 photos including 2 in use, 12 reviews collected), the conversion rate reached 4,2%, or 34 sales a month: 5,6 times more, with no change to the advertising budget. !Product page conversion, A/B testing photos, description and customer reviews for a 5x conversion rate
