76% of people who run a local search on a smartphone visit a business within 24 hours. The Google local pack (the three results shown with a map at the top of the page) captures 45% of the clicks on those searches. For a tradesperson, a restaurant owner or a local service provider, appearing in those three results is often worth more than a Google Ads campaign.

At ConvertiLab, we have been helping local business owners improve their Google presence since 2021. Across our 150+ clients, those who followed the 8 optimisations in this guide saw their Google Maps traffic rise by 40 to 120% in three months.

What is local SEO and why is it essential for neighbourhood businesses?

Local SEO covers all the techniques that help a business appear in geolocated search results, in particular the local pack (three results with a map) and Google Maps. It rests on 4 pillars: the Google Business Profile listing, customer reviews, local citations (NAP mentions on third-party sites) and localised content on your website. For a local business, local SEO pays off better than national SEO because the competition is far weaker.

The Google Local algorithm weighs 3 broad factors when it ranks listings: relevance (does your listing match the search?), distance (are you close to the searcher?) and prominence (do you have reviews, backlinks, citations?). You can work on relevance and prominence, distance depends on your physical location.

The 4 components of local SEO:

  • Google Business Profile: your business listing on Google, the central pillar
  • Customer reviews: the number one local ranking factor after geographical proximity
  • Local citations (NAP): consistent mentions of your name, address and phone number across directories
  • Localised content: pages and articles optimised for your geographical area

  • How do you create and optimise your Google Business Profile step by step?

To create and optimise your Google Business Profile, follow 5 steps: create and verify the listing (5 to 14 days by post), fill in the complete NAP details, choose the right primary category, add good photos, and write a description that includes your geographical keywords. Verification by post is the longest step, but it is essential if you want to manage the listing. In 2026, Google also offers video verification, which cuts that wait to 24 to 48 hours for certain types of business.

The 8 essential optimisations for your Google Business Profile:

  • Consistent NAP details: Name, Address and Phone number strictly identical on your website, your Google listing, directories and social networks. The smallest inconsistency ("Rd" versus "Road") hurts your ranking.

  • A precise primary category: "Plumber" rather than "Building contractor". The more precise it is, the better Google understands what you do.

  • An optimised description (750 characters): set out clearly what you do, include your geographical keywords ("plumber Rueil-Malmaison"), mention your strengths.

  • Good photos: listings with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more clicks through to the website.

  • Opening hours kept up to date: including bank holidays and one-off closures.

  • Regular Google posts: publish 1 or 2 posts a week to signal to Google that your business is active.

  • Products and services listed: with descriptions, prices and photos.

  • A Q&A section: anticipate the common questions and answer them directly on your listing.

  • How do you get more Google reviews and handle negative ones?

The most effective way to get more Google reviews is to ask every satisfied customer, systematically, right after the job, with a direct link to the review page. At ConvertiLab, the clients who ask for reviews proactively go from 3 to 25 reviews in three months on average, which is usually enough to enter the local pack for searches in their town.

A strategy for collecting Google reviews quickly:

  • Send a text message with the direct review link after every job
  • Put a QR code on your end-of-job paperwork
  • Reply to EVERY review (positive and negative), it signals your activity to Google
  • Never buy reviews, Google detects fake reviews and can suspend your listing

  • How to reply to a negative review:

  • Stay professional and courteous (it is public)
  • Thank the customer for their feedback
  • Acknowledge the problem if it is legitimate
  • Offer a concrete solution
  • Invite them to continue the conversation in private

  • A real example: a plumber in Vincennes managed by ConvertiLab had 4 Google reviews and was not appearing in the local pack despite a complete listing. After two months of an automated review request campaign by text message (sent two hours after each call-out), he reached 31 reviews with a 4.8 rating. The result: entry into the local pack on 7 target searches, "plumber Vincennes", "emergency plumbing Vincennes" and 5 neighbouring searches. Inbound calls from Google Maps multiplied by 4 in 90 days, with no advertising spend at all.

What other local SEO signals should you strengthen beyond Google Business Profile?

Beyond Google Business Profile, 3 signals strengthen local SEO: local citations (consistent NAP on Pages Jaunes, Yelp and trade directories), localised content on your website (pages dedicated to each geographical area, LocalBusiness Schema markup), and inbound links from local sites. Those 3 signals, combined with a well optimised Google listing, will take you to the top positions of the local pack within 3 to 6 months.

Priority local citations for a French small business:

  • Pages Jaunes / Solocal
  • Yelp
  • TripAdvisor (hospitality, tourism)
  • The trade directories for your profession
  • Your local Chamber of Commerce and Industry

  • On your website:

  • Create a dedicated page for every geographical area you serve
  • Add a Google Maps map on the contact page
  • Use LocalBusiness Schema markup (name, address, phone, openingHours)
  • Publish blog articles with a local angle

The Google local pack: how to get in

The local pack is that block of three businesses with a map that appears at the top of the results when Google detects local intent: "plumber Rueil-Malmaison", "Italian restaurant near me", "osteopath open on Saturday". On its own it captures more than half the clicks on those searches. Getting in matters more than any position in the classic results.

Google ranks listings on three official factors:

FactorWhat Google looks atWhat you can do
RelevanceHow closely the search matches your listingAn exact primary category, secondary categories, services listed one by one, a description that names your services and your town
DistanceHow close the searcher is to your address (or your service area)An exact address, a declared service area for mobile trades, the same contact details on your site and in directories
ProminenceWhat the web says about youThe number and freshness of your reviews, your replies to them, mentions on other sites, links to your site, a consistent name, address and phone number everywhere

The six actions that get you into the local pack

  • Choose the right primary category: this is the strongest criterion. "Plumber" and "Heating engineer" do not rank on the same searches.
  • Collect reviews every week, not in waves: Google rewards regularity, and reply to every one.
  • Publish recent photos of your work, your premises and your team, at least two a month.
  • Align your name, address and phone number across your website, PagesJaunes, your trade directories and your social networks, character for character.
  • Link the listing to a page on your site that covers the same town and the same service, with a map and your opening hours.
  • Use Google posts for your offers and your news: they signal a living listing.

  • Those six actions are part of our local SEO service. For a first diagnosis, our free SEO audit checks how consistent your website and your listing are.

Frequently asked questions about local SEO and Google Business Profile

How long does it take to appear in the Google local pack?

Once your Google Business Profile listing has been created and verified, it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks to start appearing in local results for searches with little competition. For top positions on competitive searches, full optimisation takes 3 to 6 months. ConvertiLab clients who follow every optimisation reach their first top positions in 6 to 8 weeks on average.

Is Google Business Profile really free?

Yes, Google Business Profile is completely free. You can create your listing, publish posts, reply to reviews and see your statistics at no cost. It is one of the few marketing tools with an almost unlimited return: the cost is zero, and the benefits (visibility, calls, visits) are measurable directly in the listing dashboard.

Do you need physical premises to do local SEO?

No. Service businesses that travel to the customer (plumbers, electricians, consultants, coaches) can use Google Business Profile by setting a "service area" without showing their home address. That said, having registered physical premises makes it easier to rank in the local pack, because Google gives more weight to businesses with a verifiable address. For providers without premises, NAP consistency and review volume are the most important levers.

How many photos should you put on Google Business Profile?

There is no maximum, and the more the better. Listings with more than 10 photos receive 35% more clicks on average. Ideally publish at least: 1 cover photo (1920x1080), 1 logo, 3 to 5 photos of your work or your services, and 1 or 2 photos of your team or your premises. Add new photos regularly, it is a sign of activity that Google rewards in its local ranking algorithm. !Google Business Profile photos - cover logo completed work team activity signal
