In 2026, backlinks are still one of Google's 3 most important ranking factors. A link from a recognised site pointing to yours amounts to a vote of confidence, Google raises your domain authority and ranks you better on your keywords. But not all links are equal: a poor link profile can trigger a penalty that sinks your rankings overnight.

At ConvertiLab, we build link building into the SEO strategies we run for the agency's 150+ clients. Here are the methods that genuinely work in 2026, with no risk of a penalty.

Backlinks matter for SEO because they are the main authority signal in Google's algorithm: every link from a third-party site to yours is read as a vote of confidence. The more links you receive from recognised sites that are topically relevant, the more Google treats your site as a reference in its field. Pages with quality backlinks rank 3.8x better on average than pages without them, all else being equal.

Backlinks influence 4 key metrics:

  • SERP ranking: pages with more quality backlinks rank better on competitive keywords
  • Discovery by Google: Google's crawlers follow links to index new pages faster
  • Domain authority (DA/DR): a score from 0 to 100 that measures your site's overall strength
  • Lasting referral traffic: unlike advertising, a backlink keeps sending visitors indefinitely
  • Referral traffic: visitors who reach your site by clicking the link directly

  • What makes a backlink a quality one:

  • Topical relevance: the source site covers the same subject as you
  • Domain authority: a Domain Rating (DR) above 30 preferably
  • Editorial placement: the link sits naturally inside the content (not in a footer or a sidebar)
  • A dofollow attribute: it passes "link equity" (unlike nofollow)

  • The best strategies for earning backlinks in 2026 are: creating "link bait" content (studies, guides, free tools that other sites want to cite), guest blogging on sites with strong authority (DR 30+), the Skyscraper technique (improve the best existing content, then contact the sites that link to it), and digital PR (expert interviews, citations in the trade press). These methods produce lasting, natural links that Google rewards with no risk of a penalty.

5 link building strategies that work:

  • Link bait content: original studies with exclusive data, shareable infographics, ultimate guides, free online tools. This is the most durable method, the links arrive naturally, with no outreach.

  • Strategic guest blogging: write guest articles for quality sites in your sector (DR 30+). Offer original content with real added value. Avoid the "article farms" that carry no SEO value.

  • The Skyscraper technique: find a popular piece of content in your niche, create a better version (more complete, more current, better structured), then contact the sites that link to the original and offer them your version.

  • Broken link replacement: find dead links (404) on sites in your sector and offer your content as a replacement. Tool: Ahrefs "Broken Link Checker".

  • Digital PR: publish press releases for your important news, answer journalists through HARO (Help a Reporter Out), take part in podcasts and interviews as an expert.

  • A real ConvertiLab example: a coaching practice in Lyon created a free PDF guide, "10 mistakes made by entrepreneurs changing career", and promoted it to 20 HR bloggers. In 4 months it earned 14 natural backlinks from sites rated DR 25 to 55, which took its own DR from 8 to 24 and moved its rankings on 3 target keywords from page 4 to page 2 of Google, without paying a single euro for links.

To measure your backlink profile, the key metrics to watch are: the number of referring domains (more important than the total number of links), Domain Rating (DR) or Domain Authority (DA), the dofollow to nofollow ratio (ideally 70 to 80% dofollow), and the rate of acquisition (steady growth is preferable to a sudden spike). These metrics are available free in Google Search Console, and in more detail through Ahrefs, SEMrush or Moz.

    Tools for analysing your backlinks:

  • Google Search Console: the links Google has detected (free, official data)
  • Ahrefs: full backlink and DR analysis (paid, the most accurate)
  • Moz Link Explorer: Domain Authority checks
  • SEMrush: backlink audits and competitor opportunities
  • Majestic SEO: Trust Flow and Citation Flow

  • Referring domains count for more than the total number of links: 10 links from 10 different sites are worth more than 100 links from the same site. A natural profile also contains roughly 20 to 30% nofollow links.

The most dangerous link building mistakes are buying links in bulk from poor quality sites (a Google Penguin penalty), using PBNs (Private Blog Networks, networks of sites created purely to generate links), excessive and systematic link exchanges, and over-optimised anchors (the same exact anchor text repeated too often). Google's algorithms detect these practices and they can sink your rankings irreversibly without a manual disavow.

A 6 month link building action plan:

  • Months 1-2: Audit your current profile, identify the opportunities, create link bait content
  • Months 3-4: Launch guest blogging and partnerships. Start the Skyscraper technique
  • Months 5-6: Step up digital PR, measure the results. Adjust your strategy

There is no magic number. It all depends on the competition for your target keyword. A keyword with little competition ("plumber Rueil-Malmaison") may need only 5 to 10 quality backlinks, while a highly competitive keyword ("website design") can take hundreds. Quality always beats quantity: one link from a DR 70+ site is worth more than 100 links from DR 10 sites. The recommended method: analyse the backlinks of the page ranking first for your target keyword with Ahrefs, and you will see exactly how many links, and what quality of links, you need to beat.

No. Even though nofollow links do not pass "link equity" directly, they help diversify your link profile (which is natural), bring real referral traffic, and raise your brand's profile. Google has treated them as "hints" since 2019, and they are part of a natural, healthy link profile. A site with 100% dofollow links looks suspicious.

Yes. Buying links is an explicit violation of Google's guidelines (Search Essentials). If it is detected, and the Penguin and SpamBrain algorithms are getting better and better at detecting it, your site can receive a manual penalty that will sink your rankings. Recovering from a penalty takes 6 to 12 months at the very least. Stick to organic strategies based on content creation and networking so that links come naturally.

How do you find guest blogging opportunities in your sector?

The simplest method: search Google for "your sector + guest articles", "your sector + guest post", or "your sector + submit an article". Check the site's DR (Ahrefs Free or the free Moz Link Explorer), read the editorial guidelines, and propose an original subject that has not been covered yet. Avoid sites that accept everything without review, those links carry no SEO value and can damage your profile. !Strategic guest blogging - DR opportunities sector sites guest articles link building
