To find customers as a tradesperson in 2026, the methods that work are local Google rankings, an optimised Google Business Profile, a website with photos of your work, and digital word of mouth through online reviews. Paid advertising can speed results up, but you do not need it to get started.

This guide draws on the real results of more than 150 tradespeople (plumbers, electricians, painters, joiners, landscapers) ConvertiLab has worked with. No theory, only tested methods with real figures.

Why is finding customers harder for a tradesperson today?

Finding customers is harder for a tradesperson today because 87% of householders look for a tradesperson on Google before asking anyone they know for a recommendation. If you are not visible online, you simply do not exist for them, even if you are the best tradesperson in your area.

The good news: your competitors usually have not done the work online either. Fewer than 40% of French tradespeople had an optimised website in 2025. Staking your claim now means taking ground that is almost empty. It is a rare window: in 3 to 5 years the digital competition in the building and renovation trades will be far tougher.

Method 1: local Google rankings (the most profitable)

Local Google rankings are the most profitable method for a tradesperson because they catch customers who are actively looking for your service in your town. Someone typing "electrician Versailles" into Google is ready to call within the hour.

How it works:

Step 1, Create a dedicated page per service AND per area

For example: "electrician Versailles", "consumer unit installation Versailles", "emergency electrician Versailles". Each page targets one specific search.

Step 2, Put the keyword in the right places

The title tag, the H1, the first 100 words, the URL. 3 to 5 natural mentions are enough.

Step 3, Add real content

Photos of your jobs, the area you cover, your speciality, your rough prices. The more informative the page, the more useful Google judges it to be.

Typical result for a tradesperson at ConvertiLab: 4 to 8 extra quote requests a month within 3 to 6 months, with no advertising budget.

A real case: Karim, a plumber in Rueil-Malmaison, had no online presence at all and relied purely on word of mouth. After an optimised "plumber Rueil-Malmaison" page was built, he reached position 3 on that search (500 searches a month) in 5 weeks. The result: 6 to 9 extra quote requests a month for an investment of 490€.

Method 2: Google Business Profile (results in 2 weeks)

Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local results block. It is often the first thing a customer sees when they search for a tradesperson in their town.

The 4 things that make the difference:

  • The main category: choose it carefully. "Electrician" works better than "Service company" for showing up on the right searches.
  • The photos: 10 at a minimum (before and after jobs, you at work, your van). Listings with photos get 42% more requests for directions.
  • Customer reviews: 10 reviews minimum, rating 4.5+. Send a text message to your last 10 happy customers with the direct link to your Google listing.
  • Weekly posts: a photo from a job with 2 lines of text, every week.

  • At ConvertiLab we optimise every client's Google Business listing while we build their site. The gain in visibility usually shows within 2 to 3 weeks.

Method 3: a website with photos of your work

A tradesperson's website does not need to be complicated. What converts best:

  • A clear home page: who you are, what you do, where you work, a clickable phone number
  • A gallery of completed jobs: before and after photos, with the town and the type of work
  • Customer testimonials: at least 5, with a first name, a town and the type of work
  • A simple quote form: first name, email, phone, description, postcode

  • Across 150+ ConvertiLab clients, tradespeople with photos of their work and testimonials get 3× more quote requests than those with a brochure site carrying no social proof.

Method 4: digital word of mouth

Google reviews: after every job that goes well, send the customer a WhatsApp message with the direct link to your Google listing. Conversion rate: 20 to 40%.

Before and after on Instagram: one before photo, one after photo, 2 lines of description and 5 local hashtags. Post twice a week. Your existing customers share, and their friends discover you.

Local Facebook groups: introduce yourself (once) and answer members who are looking for a tradesperson. It is free prospecting.

    Method 5: lead generation platforms

Platforms such as Houzz, Habitissimo and MesArtisans put tradespeople in touch with householders. They can generate leads quickly, but be careful:

  • The leads are not exclusive: 5 tradespeople get the same lead at the same time
  • Cost: 15€ to 80€ per contact
  • Total dependence on the platform

  • Our advice: use these platforms to get going or to fill a quiet diary, but build your SEO alongside so that you no longer depend on them in 6 to 12 months.

Method 6: local advertising (Google Ads or Meta Ads)

Local Google Ads: your ad appears at the top for "electrician [town]". Cost: 2€ to 15€ per click. Recommended budget: 300€ to 1 500€ a month.

Meta Ads: precise geographic targeting around your area. Effective for renovation work. Minimum budget: 10€ a day.

Before you launch any advertising, make sure your site converts. A page with no testimonials and no photos will waste your budget. The rule at ConvertiLab: local SEO first, ads afterwards, once the diary is 70% full and you want to accelerate.

Estimate your advertising budget for your trade

What does getting a tradesperson online cost in 2026?

The full budget for an effective digital presence as a tradesperson:

    ActionCostTime to results
Google Business ProfileFree2 to 4 weeks
Brochure site with local SEO490€ to 1 490€2 to 6 months
    Local Google Ads campaign300€ to 1 500€ a monthImmediate
Social media management0€ if you do it yourself3 to 6 months

The minimum viable setup for a tradesperson starting online: an optimised Google Business listing plus a 5 page brochure site at 490€, so a complete presence for under 700€ all in.

Where should you start as a tradesperson with no online presence?

A concrete 6 month action plan:

  • Week 1: create or claim your Google Business Profile (free). Add photos, opening hours, your main category and a description naming the towns you cover.
  • Weeks 2 to 4: have your brochure site built, with photos of your work, a quote form and pages optimised for your local searches.
  • Month 2: text your 10 best customers to ask for a Google review. Target: at least 10 reviews.
  • Month 3: look in Google Search Console at which searches bring traffic. Create pages for the searches you are missing.
  • Months 4 to 6: post 1 to 2 job photos a week on Instagram and on your Google Business listing. Fresh content sends Google a positive signal.
  • Month 6 and beyond: if your diary is still too empty, test local Google Ads for 1 month with 300€ to fill the gaps.

  • The most important point: consistency beats intensity. 30 minutes a week for 6 months is worth more than one week of effort followed by 5 months of nothing.

Work out the ROI of your digital presence as a tradesperson: if digital brings you 2 jobs a month on average (one job every 2 weeks on an already busy diary) at an average invoice of 1490€, that is 1 600€ of extra revenue a month, or 19 200€ over the year. A 990€ brochure site is paid back in under 3 weeks. This estimate is conservative: our tradesperson clients usually report between 3 and 8 new jobs within the first 3 months, driven by local rankings and Google reviews.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you find customers as a tradesperson without paid advertising?

The two most effective methods with no advertising budget are local SEO and optimising your Google Business Profile. Together, those two actions bring a tradesperson 3 to 8 quote requests a month on average, with nothing spent on advertising.

Does a tradesperson need a website to find customers?

Yes, a website is essential for a tradesperson in 2026. 87% of consumers look for a tradesperson on Google before calling. Without a site you do not exist for them. A 490€ brochure site with local SEO can bring in 3 to 10 extra quote requests a month.

Is social media useful for finding work as a tradesperson?

Instagram and Facebook are useful for a tradesperson, but they come second to local SEO. The rule: your website and Google first, social media after. Before and after photos of your jobs on Instagram are an effective way to generate digital word of mouth.

How can a tradesperson stand out from the local competition?

The tradespeople who stand out locally combine three things: a professional site with photos of their work, a Google Business listing with at least 10 customer reviews, and visible testimonials. Being open about prices and timeframes is a strong advantage too.
