Social Media for Your Business
A complete guide to building your company's presence on social media. Strategy, content, editorial calendar and measuring results.
The steps to follow
Choose the right platforms
You do not need to be everywhere. Pick two or three platforms where your audience actually is. LinkedIn is essential for B2B and professional services. Instagram suits visual businesses: restaurants, fashion, interiors, property. Facebook still works for local shops and for businesses targeting the over-35s. TikTok reaches 18 to 35 year olds with short, engaging video. Pinterest works for interiors, fashion, food and crafts. Look at where your competitors are active and where they get the most engagement. It is better to excel on two platforms than to be mediocre on five.
Define your content strategy
Your content should give your audience something, not just promote your products. Follow the 80/20 rule: 80% useful, educational or entertaining content, 20% promotional. Set your content pillars: three to five recurring themes that reflect your expertise. For a web agency, that might be design tips, SEO advice, behind the scenes on projects, client stories and web trends. Match the format to the platform: carousels on Instagram and LinkedIn, short video on TikTok and Reels, longer posts on LinkedIn. Create a visual style guide for your posts: colours, typefaces, photographic style. Visual consistency is what makes your brand recognisable.
Build an editorial calendar
An editorial calendar is what keeps your presence regular and organised. Plan your posts at least two weeks ahead. Set a frequency you can actually sustain: three to five posts a week on Instagram, two or three on LinkedIn, one a day on TikTok. Work out the best posting times for your audience by testing different slots and reviewing the results. Mix the formats: images, carousels, video, stories, reels. Build in the key dates in your sector and the obvious seasonal hooks: holidays, events, awareness days. Use a scheduling tool such as Buffer or Hootsuite to queue your posts. Keep some room to react to the news and to the trends of the moment.
Produce content worth watching
Content quality drives your engagement and your growth. Invest in a decent smartphone and some proper lighting for your photos and videos. Use Canva to create professional visuals easily, even with no design skills. Write engaging captions that open with a hook to stop the scroll. Ask a question at the end of a post to encourage comments. Use hashtags strategically: five to ten relevant hashtags on Instagram, three to five on LinkedIn. Create recurring series your audience looks forward to: “Tuesday tip”, “Before and after”. Repurpose your content: a blog article can become a carousel, an infographic and three posts.
Engage your community
Social media is a conversation, not a broadcast. Reply to every comment and direct message within 24 hours. Engage proactively with the accounts in your target audience: like, comment and share their content. Create reasons to interact: polls in stories, open questions, competitions. Spot your most active supporters and thank them. Work with micro-influencers in your sector to reach new audiences. Handle negative reviews professionally and openly. Start a Facebook group or a LinkedIn community to bring your audience together around your expertise. Engagement earns you algorithmic visibility, which brings new followers organically.
Measure and improve your results
Without measurement there is no improvement. Track your indicators monthly: follower growth, engagement rate, reach, clicks to your site, conversions. Use each platform's own statistics plus Google Analytics for social traffic. Identify your best performing posts and work out why they worked: subject, format, time of day, type of hook. Do more of what works and drop what brings nothing. Adjust your editorial calendar according to the data. Compare your performance with your competitors to see where you stand. Run a full review every quarter to adjust the overall strategy.
Our advice
Consistency matters more than frequency: three good posts a week beat seven mediocre ones.
Short video (Reels, TikTok) gets two to three times more reach than static images on average.
Reply to every comment within an hour of posting to boost the algorithm and show that you are present.
