You spend thousands of euros bringing traffic to your site, yet only 2 to 3% of visitors do the thing you want them to do. That is the average conversion rate of a website. The good news: improving your conversion rate by a single point can double your revenue. CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) tunes every element of your site to maximise the share of visitors who take action, without increasing your advertising budget.

At ConvertiLab we have been applying these techniques to the sites of our 150+ clients since 2021. Analyse your site for free.

What counts as a good conversion rate, and how do you calculate it?

The conversion rate is calculated like this: number of conversions / number of visitors × 100. A "conversion" can be a purchase, a newsletter sign-up, a quote request, a download or a phone call. Benchmarks vary by sector: general e-commerce 2,5 to 3%, SaaS / software 3 to 5%, B2B services 2 to 4%, an optimised landing page 5 to 15%. The goal is not to hit an absolute figure but to keep improving your own rate.

Conversion rate benchmarks by sector (2026 reference):

SectorAverage rateTarget
General e-commerce2,5 to 3%> 4%
Fashion / Clothing1,5 to 2%> 3%
SaaS / Software3 to 5%> 7%
B2B services2 to 4%> 5%
Dedicated landing page5 to 15%> 20%

Which CRO techniques have the biggest impact on a website conversion rate?

The 5 CRO techniques with the strongest impact are: 1) Clarify your value proposition, because your visitor has to understand in under 5 seconds what you offer, why it is different, and what to do next. 2) Optimise your CTAs, with a contrasting colour, benefit-led wording ("Get my free quote" rather than "Submit"), a large enough target (44×44 px minimum on mobile) and strategic placement. 3) Cut friction, with short forms (3 fields maximum), no compulsory sign-up and autofill. 4) Add social proof, since 92% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. 5) Improve load speed, because every extra second cuts conversions by 7%.

The elements to test first with A/B testing:

  • Main headline: the biggest potential impact
  • CTA: wording, colour, position, size
  • Images: hero image, product photos, testimonials with a photo
  • Price: presentation, anchoring, promotions
  • Forms: number of fields, order, labels

  • How do you set up A/B testing to improve your conversion rate without technical expertise?

A/B testing means comparing two versions of a page to see which one converts better. The fundamental rule: test one element at a time so you can measure its impact in isolation. Recommended tools: Google Optimize (free), VWO or Optimizely for advanced tests, Hotjar for heatmaps and session recordings. A valid test needs at least 1 000 visitors per variant and two weeks of running time; below that, the results are not statistically reliable.

How to read an A/B test: variant B wins if it gets a statistically higher conversion rate with a confidence level of at least 95%. Most tools work out that significance automatically. Beware of "false winners": a spike over the first 3 days can reverse across two full weeks. Never cut a test short before two complete weeks of data, even when the result looks obvious.

The 3 most expensive A/B mistakes for a small business:

  • Testing on too little traffic (< 500 visitors a week means unreliable results)
  • Stopping as soon as B beats A on a single day (regression to the mean)
  • Changing the page being tested mid-test (this invalidates all the data)

  • A continuous improvement cycle for CRO:

  • Collect the data (analytics, heatmaps, user surveys)
  • Analyse the friction points (where do visitors give up?)
  • Form a hypothesis for the improvement
  • Test it with A/B testing
  • Roll out the winning variant
  • Start again with the next element

  • How do psychology and social proof improve a conversion rate?

Conversion psychology rests on 4 levers: social proof (customer testimonials with a photo and a real name, customer counts such as "Joined by 15 000+ business owners", recognisable client logos, case studies with numbers), ethical urgency (limited stock when the stock really is limited, a time-limited offer with a real deadline, never fake urgency, which destroys trust), handling objections (answer the classic doubts: "It is too expensive → show the value", "I am not sure → money-back guarantee"), and personalisation (personalised experiences convert 80% better).

The AIDA principle applied to your service pages:

  • Attention: a headline that names the problem or the result they want
  • Interest: a subheading that explains how you solve the problem
  • Desire: testimonials and concrete results that inspire and reassure
  • Action: one clear CTA, no friction, above the fold

  • Structure every service or sales page on this model. Most small businesses make the opposite mistake: they start by talking about themselves (the company, the story, the values) instead of the visitor's problem. The first 5 seconds decide everything.

    The three conversion quick wins:

  • Mobile speed: 67% of traffic comes from mobile, and mobile conversion rates are 2× lower than on desktop
  • A visible CTA: one main CTA per page, contrasting colour, benefit-led wording
  • Social proof: put a testimonial or a rating directly under your main CTA

  • Conversion psychology - social proof urgency objections personalisation CTA

Frequently asked questions about improving your conversion rate

Do you have to choose between SEO and CRO?

No, the two are complementary and inseparable. SEO brings the traffic, CRO converts it. Investing in SEO without optimising conversion is filling a leaky bucket. Ideally you work on both in parallel: SEO on a 6 to 12 month long-term view, CRO in cycles of 2 to 4 weeks per test. Start with CRO if your site already gets 500+ visitors a month, because optimising the conversion of your existing traffic gives immediate results while the SEO matures.

How much does a CRO strategy cost for a small business?

CRO spending ranges from a few hundred euros a month (tools plus internal time) to several thousand for expert support. The return is usually 3 to 10× because you get more out of your existing traffic without increasing your ad spend. Mathematically it is the most profitable lever there is: doubling your conversion rate is the same as doubling your traffic, at no extra cost.

Which tools should you use to measure your conversion rate?

Google Analytics 4 (free) is the essential foundation for setting up and tracking your conversions by channel. Add Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity (free) for heatmaps and session recordings; those tools show you exactly where visitors stall or give up on your pages.

Which pages should you optimise first on your site?

Find your high-traffic pages with a low conversion rate: those are your biggest quick-win opportunities. In Google Analytics 4, go to Reports > Pages and screens, sort by Sessions in descending order, and look for pages converting at under 2% despite heavy traffic. Put 80% of your CRO effort into those 3 to 5 pages, because they account for most of your lost traffic. A real ConvertiLab example: a career-change coach in Paris had a conversion rate of 1,2% on their services page (400 visitors a month, so 5 leads). After an audit (a vague value proposition, no testimonials, a generic "Contact us" CTA), we rewrote the headline, added 3 testimonials with photos, and changed the CTA to "Book my free 30-minute review". Within 45 days: a conversion rate of 5,8%, so 23 leads a month on the same traffic, and monthly revenue multiplied by 4. !CRO results coach Paris 1.2→5.8% - headline testimonials free review CTA x4 revenue
